Bag Making Machine Troubleshooting Technical Deep Dive: Film Wrinkle and Wandering Root Cause Analysis

Film wrinkles and wandering are frequent issues that cause seal defects, mis-cuts, and jams. The root causes can be mechanical (roller misalignment, worn bearings), tension-related (uneven tension, tension spikes), or registration-related (sensor drift). A systematic diagnostic approach is essential. First, observe the wrinkle pattern: diagonal wrinkles indicate tension misbalance; horizontal wrinkles indicate uneven nip pressure; edge wrinkles indicate misaligned guide rollers. Use a straight edge and a dial indicator to check roller parallelism. The rollers should be parallel within 0.05 mm over 1 meter. If a roller is misaligned, adjust its mounting. Check for worn bearings that cause roller wobble; replace if necessary. The film edge guide sensor (ultrasonic or optical) should be inspected; a dirty or misaligned sensor causes wandering. Clean the sensor lens and recalibrate it using a reference edge. The sensor's gain and offset should be checked. The film tension is measured by a load cell or a dancer position. Tension spikes often occur during acceleration or deceleration; the machine's motion profile may need adjustment. The acceleration and deceleration rates should be reduced if the film is sensitive. The dancer's air pressure or spring force should be checked; if the dancer is too stiff, it cannot absorb tension variations; if too loose, it does not control tension properly.

Film roll quality: The film roll itself can be the cause. A roll with hard edges (due to winding tension variations) causes the film to wander. The roll's edge should be straight; if not, the roll should be rewinded. The roll's core must be centered on the shaft; an eccentric core causes periodic wandering. The film's thickness variation also causes tension changes; the thickness gauge data can help identify if the variation is periodic (correlated with roll circumference). If the film is slipping on the pull rollers, the nip pressure may be insufficient; increase the pressure or clean the rollers. The pull roller surface may be glazed; replace or resurface it.

Registration and cut length issues: Wrinkling can also be caused by the film being cut too late or too early, causing stress. Check the registration sensor's response time and alignment. The sensor's mounting must be rigid to avoid vibration-induced errors. The film advance distance should be verified; if the film is stretched, the bag length will be longer; the cut length setting must be compensated.

Diagnostic tools: A high-speed camera can capture the film's path and reveal transient wrinkles that occur only at high speed. The camera footage is analyzed frame-by-frame. A tension meter (portable) can be used to measure tension at different points. The machine's control system logs tension, speed, and position errors; reviewing these logs can pinpoint the moment the wrinkle starts.

Maintenance: Regular cleaning of all rollers and sensors is preventive. The edge guide sensor should be checked daily. The roller bearings should be lubricated per schedule. By following a structured diagnostic process, film wrinkle and wandering issues can be quickly resolved, minimizing scrap and downtime.
