Biodegradable Bag Making Machine Technical Deep Dive: Temperature Profiling for Heat-Sensitive Polymers

Biodegradable polymers such as PLA, PBAT, PBS, and starch blends have narrow sealing temperature windows, typically 100-140°C, compared to 150-200°C for PE. Operating within this window is challenging because any deviation of ±3-5°C can cause under-sealing (weak bonds) or over-sealing (burn-through, discoloration, or degradation). The bag making machine's thermal system must be highly precise. The sealing bar is equipped with high-accuracy thermocouples (Class A) and fast-response heaters (cartridge heaters with low thermal inertia). The PID controller is tuned with a lower integral gain to avoid overshoot, and the setpoint is maintained within ±0.5°C. Feed-forward control is essential: the controller receives the machine speed signal and adjusts the heater power in advance to compensate for the heat extraction during sealing. The feed-forward gain is calibrated for each film type. The bar's thermal uniformity is even more critical; zone control with 3-5 zones is recommended, with zone temperatures independently set to compensate for edge heat loss. The bar surface coating (PTFE) must be thin (0.1-0.2 mm) to minimize thermal resistance. The cooling after sealing is also critical; the seal must be cooled rapidly to prevent degradation. Water-cooled chill rollers with high heat transfer are used, with the chill roller temperature set to 10-20°C. The cooling rate affects the crystallinity and seal strength; for PLA, rapid cooling produces a brittle seal, while slower cooling improves toughness but requires longer cooling time. The machine's control system can adjust the chill roller temperature based on the film type.

Material moisture sensitivity: Biodegradable polymers are hygroscopic; moisture acts as a plasticizer, lowering the melting point and causing seal inconsistency. The machine's film handling system may include a dehumidifying dryer for the film rolls, or the machine can be enclosed in a climate-controlled chamber. The film moisture content should be below 0.5% for PLA. The machine's control system can include a moisture sensor that measures the film's moisture level and adjusts the sealing temperature accordingly – higher moisture requires lower temperature to avoid steam bubbles. The film feed tension must be lower (20-30% less than PE) to prevent stretching, as biodegradable films have lower tensile modulus. The pull roller nip pressure is reduced.

Process stability: The narrow sealing window means that any fluctuation in ambient temperature or film quality can cause rejects. The machine uses an adaptive control algorithm that monitors the seal quality (via vision or peel test) and adjusts the temperature setpoint in real-time. The algorithm uses a model-based predictive control (MPC) that accounts for the film's thermal properties and the machine's thermal dynamics. The machine also includes a temperature ramp function for startup – the bar is heated slowly to avoid thermal shock. The sealing pressure is also adjusted: lower pressure (1.5-3 bar) is used to avoid crushing the film. The dwell time is longer (0.3-0.8 seconds) to allow sufficient heat transfer, which limits the maximum speed to 80-150 BPM.

Quality control: The seal strength is tested more frequently – every 1000 bags. The peel test should show clean film tearing, not delamination. The seal appearance must be clear, without bubbles or burning. The machine's vision system uses a color camera to detect discoloration. The data is logged and used to fine-tune the temperature profile.

Maintenance: The sealing bars require more frequent cleaning because biodegradable polymers tend to char and stick more. The cooling rollers must be kept clean to maintain heat transfer. The temperature sensors and heaters must be calibrated more often (e.g., monthly). By implementing precise temperature profiling, biodegradable bag making machines produce consistent, high-quality seals on eco-friendly materials, meeting the growing demand for sustainable packaging.
